Virgin Voyages Cruise Ship Crew Tour in Bimini. Authentic Bahamian lunch and island tour.
Просмотров 117Год назад
Virgin Voyages Cruise Line does things a bit different. They don't own a "private island", like other cruise lines, but rather contract a nice "beach club" on Bimini Island, in the Bahamas....BUT... But, they also encourage their passengers AND crew to learn about real local culture and engage / befriend many local Bahamians! This video of a short "crew tour", was filmed/produced by a friend of...

    Hi John , just got my system all installed , these videos are a great help , thank you for making them . I have the 802 with a 140 tuner and an isolated back stay antenna . I’m sure it all works fine but I don’t get much up here on Lake Ontario . I look forward to getting into the Atlantic and see how well I receive . I think I’m hearing weather fax info noise on it , could just be background noise from the city. I will try at night see if I can hear a voice weather report from some where .

    Hi captain . I have an icom 700 on board and works fine . For weather would you recommend just getting a weather fax or upgrade to an 802 and use the ssb . I like to keep things simple , I’m really only looking for weather . You’re a great resource for this sort of information. Thanks for sharing

      An actual real answer is WELL beyond a youtube comment box. 😀All I can do here is just hit a few quick points, so please understand there are many variables in a choice for you (and these may be different than what myself and others may choose). First off, if you're sailing offshore (beyond VHF range), you should have a full MF/HF-DSC-SSB radio (such as an M-802 or M-803), as the GMDSS is now 25 years old and the M-700 will not allow you to message / contact shore stations, merchant ships, etc., so getting a new radio is an absolute here... If you desire to use the M-802 (or M-803) as your receiver for wefax reception, that is fine....you can use JVComm32, or GETFAX, or other such FREE programs with a laptop and get good wefax images on your screen. If you really wish to go nuts like me (I'm a longtime amateur weather geek, as well as an offshore sailor), and you really want to spend an extra $2000, then a Furuno FAX-408 is fine piece of kit, and will serve you well..although it is overkill for most cruising sailors. BUT... But, be fully aware that ALL of your HF comms reception success (whether wefax, SSB voice, data, DSC, etc.) is all about your signal-to-noise-ratio, which is almost entirely governed by your on-board noise / RFI....so, your success with new radios and/or new wefax gear will be determined by how RF quiet your boat is... As I wrote there is A LOT MORE to all of this....please look at the playlists I put together on my youtube channel as well as my stickies on the Marine Electronics page on cruisersforum.com I hope this helps? 73, John, KA4WJA

      Hi John , yes this helps immensely!! I will upgrade my radio to an 802 and also get a wefax . I have played with my 700 a bit and did receive voice and some weather and that was in the marina . I’m sure offshore will be much better . The boat has a large copper plating under the aft cabin and an isolated back stay antenna . Also has a large dyna plate at the mast that I think is connected to the copper as well. I will get it all in and let you know how it goes . Thank you very much

    Hi John, Dan / KE4G here. Just watched a couple of your videos. I found the one about the Lifeboat very interesting. I have only done one cruise ship adventure, but can't imagine all the chaos that would be going on if ever everyone had to resort to using the lifeboat, I enjoyed your ocean crossings as well. Never have done a oceanic crossing... but enjoyed cruising the Bahamas for a few months on a 37' Tartan with just the wife and myself back in the early 90s. The guys on 3.755 were wondering how you are doing. Hope you are doing well and enjoying your boat . 73

Of course, a video doesn't do any of them justice, ya' really need to see 'em in person! :) This is just my way of encouraging everyone to come and experience a live performance! Thanks for the detailed explanation, Captain. I may have missed it, but why were you calling the USCG November Mike November? Why NMN? Or were they named NMN in the radio list? Thanks

    • @captainjohn49
      @captainjohn49 Год назад

      Sergii, You're very welcome! I'm glad to have helped. And, be sure to have a look at the whole HF-DSC playlist. ruclips.net/p/PLnN6ygtZ3h2n3z5nlv-ga2zYuPozhUXZX As well as my other playlists, that cover various communications subjects, sailing, etc. ruclips.net/user/captainjohn49playlists As for calling "November Mike November" (NMN) this is the callsign of the US Coast Guard area master station in Chesapeake Virginia. The US Coast Guard has many two-way HF communications stations (Miami, New Orleans, Virginia, California, Hawaii, Guam, and Kodiak AK) and most are remotely monitored and controlled. In the old days when they actually monitored HF-SSB Voice (now they only monitor HF-DSC, then switching to two-way SSB Voice AFTER initial signaling/contact via HF-DSC), if calling a "MayDay", etc., you could certainly have just called "US Coast Guard, MayDay, MayDay, Mayday.....", etc. And, of course, out of habit of about 50 years of radio communications experience, using a station's callsign / calling a station by their callsign is always the proper way. :) And, when some the guy on the other end is a trained radio op, they are of course trained to recognize their callsign as easily as their own personal name! :) But, in this instance while I was making a general "Safety" DSC call to the US Coast Guard (using their all stations US Coast Guard MMSI # of 003669999), since the time and distance between myself and them and using the 12mhz DSC channel, I knew that I would be within easy communications range of NMN in Virginia, so to better assist them (USCG) in recognizing which station I was actually calling and to better aide them in responding I called "November Mike November". Again, if you're in Distress and calling a MayDay, you really won't need to worry about the other station's callsign... But, it is just common use / habit for me. :) BTW....PLEASE remember that HF-DSC is of vital importance everywhere these days! As the US Coast Guard has joined the other > 80 HF Maritime Coast stations worldwide that have HF-SSB Voice capabilities, but no longer monitor HF-SSB Voice, and rather now maintain a 24/7/365 radio watch-standing on HF-DSC only! (the only maritime stations left in the world that still monitor HF-SSB Voice, as well as HF-DSC, are one in New Zealand and two in Australia....and, they are heading to DSC-only monitoring in coming years) I hope this helps and answers your questions. 73, John

    Sorry Capt. John, I'm not clear on something from the video. I understand for continuous monitoring of DSC that a separate antenna is required. However, if I initiate a DSC, will the M802 listen for an ACK on the main receiver or just the dedicated DSC receiver? If the later, then the DSC would be much useful in in an emergency and useless for non-distress modes. Regarding cancelling after having initiated on all six distress frequencies, it appears to cancel just on the frequency it is currently cancelling on. I suppose that's okay since it didn't get an ACK on the prior channel.

    Hello Capt John, and thanks for these cool videos! I see these were made many years ago. I have an opportunity to pick an M802 for reasonable money and I'm wondering if USCG and other international rescue services still monitor HF, and if the phone patch services still exist. Also, I'm a licensed ham and I am wondering what you think of the M802 as a general purpose HF rig. Thanks!

    I'm doing this course on Friday unfortunately ive had no training apart from watching your video, Can you give me an answer below is an email I required for my course I'll never work on a boat ever I don't even use a vhf radio I use uhf radio but if I don't complete the course I loose my job bit unfair, so my acessor has send below email but I'm struggling to think what he's asking for what my reply should be please 🙏 help application form and some photo ID (Passport or Driving Licence). Initially I will set you a few questions to check that you have still retained the knowledge necessary to pass the written exam. The main question is a distress scenario from which you have to produce a Distress Call and Message. for example: Your vessel VIKING QUEEN callsign GGDF MMSI 123456789 is in position 54 degrees 33 minutes North, 002 degrees 04 minutes West. Your vessel is on fire and you require immediate assistance. There are ten people on board and gale force winds. What is the Distress call, and message that you would transmit by voice after sending a Distress Alert by DSC? .......................................... Your answer should look like this: Call Mayday x3 this is VIKING QUEENx3 callsign GGDF MMSI 123456789 message Mayday VIKING QUEEN callsign GGDF MMSI 123456789 Position 54 degrees 33 minutes North, 002 degrees 04 minutes West On Fire Require Immediate Assistance 10 POB Gale force winds

    Nice video, thanks for posting. Strange that they send the charts starting at the top. If they started at the bottom, then it would be right side up when it comes out and would be easier to read. I would imagine most users have these mounted on a bulkhead like you do, and so would have the same inconvenience. Just curious: is this a standalone unit that just needs to hook up to an antenna, or does it need a separate radio receiver?

    It's useful to point out that the DSC Tests on 4207.5 are today being automatically acknowledged, not only on Portsmouth/NMN , Pt Reyes/NMC and New Orleans/NMG but also in Boston/NMF, Miami/NMA, Honolulu HI/NMO and Kodiak AK/NOJ.

      Yes, thank you for pointing out the changes in USCG equipment / services.... As of a year or so, ago...The USCG is now capable of responding to HF-DSC Test calls, on 4207.5khz, from all of their HF comm stations, except Guam....(as they are now all remotely controlled from CAMSLANT, in Virginia) Please have a look here: www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=cgcommsCall

    First of all I would like to thank you captain for these incredible videos as they have helped me a lot at understanding and learning about one of the most common and basic equipment I will be using in my profession in the upcoming years. You see I am about to begin my first educational voyage on a cargo ship as a deck cadet. Apart from that I would like to ask you something about the frequencies. You said that the IC M802 has a built in function that is scanning only the 6 frequencies for distress,safety and urgency. Does that mean ,referred to what you said in the video, that even if one has the other frequencies he will not be able to receive messages from them because the M802 does not scan them?

    • @captainjohn49
      @captainjohn49 3 года назад

      Well, the answer is yes and no....sorry, I'm not trying to be a jerk, just need to further explain things? 1) The M-802 (and the new M-803, and all current Class E GMDSS MF/HF-DSC-SSB Radiotelephones) have a separate built-in, dedicated, DSC receiver that is always on (as long as the radio is "on"), always "scanning" the six international "GMDSS DSC Calling and Safety Frequencies" (2187.5khz; 4207.5khz; 6312khz; 8414.5khz; 12577khz; and 16804.5khz), using a separate "DSC receive antenna".... This is done in the background, without operator indication or involvement (until and unless you receive a DSC message/alert).... This separate, dedicated DSC receiver cannot be changed or disabled....it is always on and working....(which is why the M-802, and EVERY MF/HF-DSC-SSB-Radiotelephone, needs a separate, dedicated DSC receive antenna) This is separate from any other operations of the radio, meaning the main functions of the radio (and its main antenna) can be actively receiving and transmitting other messages / traffic, whether voice, image, or data, and/or it could be scanning some other frequencies, whether for voice, image, or data...or even scanning other DSC freqs, such as those originally designed/designated (in the late 1990's, before the advent of efficient PACTOR and/or inexpensive sat comm data) for "routine ship's business / routine traffic signaling, etc.....on any of its bands/frequencies, and neither of these functions will interfere with each other.... 2) The M-802, and many other MF/HF-DSC-SSB-Radiotelephones, can also scan other frequencies (using the main radio receiver, and main antenna), whether for voice, image, or data, DSC....and/or you can use the main radio (and main antenna) to transmit and receive (voice, data, images, DSC, etc..) on any of its operational bands/frequencies! SO.... 3) So, the answer to your questions is yes and no.... ---- Yes, the dedicated DSC receiver is dedicated to JUST those six international GMDSS DSC Safety and Calling frequencies (2187.5khz; 4207.5khz; 6312khz; 8414.5khz; 12577khz; and 16804.5khz) ----- No, the main radio can be used to scan, and/or receive, and/or transmit-n-receive, on any of the bands/frequencies it is designed to work on.... 4) Finally....all of this should be covered in detail in any GMDSS class and in any professional offshore mariners class.... These videos are designed for layperson sailors, on small, private vessels....who would likely never spend the money ($$$$) and time to take a GMDSS class/course.... These videos are not a substitute for professional training, for professional mariners.... :) But, I'm glad I helped! :)

    Hi i have a problem with the icom 802 ssb keeps on displaying swr error on the screen. What does that mean?

    • @captainjohn49
      @captainjohn49 4 года назад

      Siviwe, assuming you have an Icom tuner (such as an AT-140, AT-130, etc.) connected, an "SWR" error on the M-802 display means that the tuner is not operating properly. a) It could be a simple connection failure, of either the tuner control wiring, and/or the coax connection from the M-802 to the tuner....or it can be the actual antenna connection to the tuner (the GTO-15 wire), and/or the GTO-15 wire connection to the backstay or whip. b) Or it could be a defective / damaged tuner itself. c) Or it could be a blown/failed 5-amp fuse internal to the M-802 (which would prevent the 13.6vdc from being sent to the tuner). d) It's possible (but, unlikely) an internal fault inside the M-802, but this is very unlikely. e) Or, it's possible it could a combination of the above problems... Troubleshooting this over the internet is very difficult and certainly not viable via RUclips.... And, it is up to you to now inspect your radio and tuner installation, its wiring and connections...and the measure the voltages, etc....and also try "tuning" on multiple bands.channels, to be sure of what's working and what's not....(or hire someone, to come to your boat and inspect/troubleshoot, etc....) Please understand that > 90% of modern electronics failures/issues are caused by connection/wiring, and not by internal faults, so advice to remove equipment to send off for repair is usually very bad advice! :) Wishing you much luck! 73, John, KA4WJA s/v Annie Laurie, WDB6927

    is it required to pay for this service? Seems good to have free voice call over the globe (of course each have to get their own radio eqiupment)

    • @captainjohn49
      @captainjohn49 4 года назад

      Emmanuel, No, there is no fee nor any payment for any of this. (except you buy the radio, and if in USA pay a $200 US Gov't License Fee, every 10 years....which is very inexpensive.) The GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) was established by the SOLAS Conventions (Safety-Of-Life-At-Sea), to provide just what it says "Safety-Of-Life-At-Sea", and is paid for by the 160+ member nations.

    How do you know which frequency to use Captain?

    • @captainjohn49
      @captainjohn49 4 года назад

      In a Distress, you'd either use 8414.5khz, or let the radio use all six GMDSS-DSC freqs. For Ship-to-Ship calling, you should know something about Rdaiowave Propagation, which I explain in video #16 in this HF-DSC Playlist. ruclips.net/video/fMTWgIvyro4/видео.html But, in brief, try 8414.5khz as you default. Please watch that video or the whole playlist, it will help.

      Jairo, Oppss. All you need to do is place your M-802 in the "open mode". Do it once, and it stays that way. And, then all will work well. Here is how you do it: With the radio OFF, there are three buttons you press and hold down are: "Mode" button, , "2" button, and the "TXF/TX" button And, while holding those buttons down, turn the radio ON by then pressing the "Power" button... And, you're done....the radio is now on and in the "Open Mode"
